<dc:description xml:lang="eng">This doctoral dissertation investigates phonological perception and production in studying German as a foreign language by native speakers of Serbian, focusing specifically on the acquisition of the German vowel system. The subject matter of the research is the process of vowel acquisition in German as a foreign language by Serbian native speakers. The research aims at investigating the students’ ability to correctly perceive and adequately produce the vowels of the German language. The research investigates two variables: the student’s age at the onset of studying German as a foreign language, and the length of study, i.e. the possible influence of these two variables on the accuracy of students’ vowel perception and production, as well as the possibility that the students may be more successful in the production of those phonemes of the German vowel system which are absent from the Serbian vowel system. Additionally, the aim was to examine if the results of this empirical study would be in accordance with the selected theoretical frameworks, which establish a relatedness of foreign language phoneme acquisition with the student’s age.The research study was conducted with six groups of participants. Five groups comprised native speakers of Serbian – four groups included primary school students who had started studying German at different ages and had studied it for different periods of time, while the fifth group included university students majoring in German language and literature at two different universities in Serbia. The sixth, control group of participants comprised native speakers of German. The collected data were analysed by quantitative methods: the perception data were statistically analysied, while the recorded production data were analysed by the computer program for the acoustic analysis of speech commonly used in experimental phonetics. The results of the study showed that the acquisition of a foreign language vowel system is a highly complex process, particularly when the target language vowel system is much reacher than the student’s native vowel system, as is the case with Serbian learners of German as a foreign language. The results of the study presented in this doctoral thesis may contribute to the development of phonetic and phonological research in the area of German linguistics in Serbia, but also to the development of the pedagogical practices related to pronunciation instruction within teaching German as a foreign language in Serbia.</dc:description>
